The Thul Rune in D2R deserves a place in your stash, but not for every reason given in the draft. If you're browsing D2R Ladder Items while planning your next upgrade, the useful distinction is between keeping Thul for Spirit and spending it for cold resistance. Spirit uses Thul; Smoke does not. That correction changes how you should think about your next defensive upgrade.
Is Thul Rune Used in Spirit or Smoke
Spirit is the relevant Runeword here, especially when you're developing a caster. Thul is a required ingredient, so keeping one available makes sense when Spirit is your next equipment goal. Its value in that situation comes from completing a recipe you intend to use, not simply from being a rune you've picked up.
Smoke belongs outside that calculation because its recipe does not include Thul. Don't save a Thul specifically for Smoke, and don't treat finding one as progress toward completing it. You can still consider Smoke as a defensive option, but it needs its own materials plan rather than sharing Spirit's.
This is the first decision to make before spending anything: which item are you actually trying to finish "I need better gear" is too vague to guide your stash choices. "I'm preparing Spirit for this caster" gives that Thul a clear job and makes it easier to decide what stays untouched.
Should You Save Thul for Spirit
If Spirit is an upgrade you expect to make soon, keeping the required Thul is a sensible default. Spending it elsewhere means that ingredient is no longer ready when you need it. That doesn't make every other use wrong; it means you should recognize the trade before committing it.
The distinction is between a real equipment plan and a vague future possibility. A caster you're actively gearing gives you a concrete reason to reserve Thul. A character with no planned Spirit use gives you less reason to protect it at the expense of an upgrade you can benefit from now.
Keep the decision tied to your current character rather than treating every useful rune as untouchable. A stash full of reserved ingredients only helps if those ingredients eventually become equipment. Before you commit Thul, check the intended recipe and the item you plan to make, rather than relying on memory.
When Is Thul Useful for Cold Resistance
Thul's cold-resistance use is a separate decision from its role in Spirit. Start with the problem your character is having: are cold attacks causing trouble, or are you trying to improve your defenses more generally Cold resistance addresses a particular weakness, so it shouldn't be treated as an answer to every survival problem.
That makes the choice practical rather than automatic. If cold resistance is what you need now, consider that use alongside your Spirit plans. If it isn't, don't spend the rune merely because the option exists. The better choice is the one that fits your equipment and the next upgrade you can realistically finish.
Thul is worth keeping with a purpose: reserve it for Spirit when that recipe is on your immediate plan, or consider its cold-resistance use when that solves a current weakness. Leave Smoke out of the Thul calculation. Before you buy D2R Runes for an upgrade, check your stash and confirm the recipe so your next purchase matches the item you actually intend to make.
